Kalkan or Kaş?

Two neighbouring towns, two different holidays. Which one fits depends on what you are after — this comparison describes both as they are, without favouring either.

Kalkan and Kaş sit close to each other on the same stretch of coast, and people often assume they are interchangeable. They are not. The difference is not about one being better — it is about what kind of days you want to have.

Terrain and streetsBuilt on a hillside with steep, stepped streets. The payoff is the view — you see the sea from almost anywhere. It is hard on the knees.Flatter and easier to walk. The centre and the peninsula are within walking distance and browsing the town is not tiring.
Getting into the seaAlmost no sandy beach; sea time happens mostly at beach clubs and from boats. A villa pool matters more here.Coves and platform entries are common and a few are near the centre. You do not need a car to swim.
AtmosphereQuiet and settled. Evenings revolve around restaurants and terraces rather than nightlife. A noticeably large British crowd.Livelier and more mixed. The centre stays open late, with bars and live music. Younger, independent travellers are more visible.
ActivitiesBoat trips, beach clubs, restaurants. The rhythm is built around resting.Known for its diving centres, plus sea kayaking, walking routes and ancient remains. More options if you want an active holiday.
Who it suitsPeople who want to spend time at the villa, with a view and quiet. Couples and larger family groups.People who want to walk everywhere, swim easily and have options. Families with small children, and anyone after activities.

The honest short answer

If the villa is the holiday — long lunches on the terrace, the pool, sunsets, an occasional boat day — Kalkan gives you more of that. If you want to walk out of the door and be in the middle of things, swim without planning it, and have somewhere to go every evening, Kaş fits better.

One practical warning that people underestimate: Kalkan's slope is real. If anyone in your group struggles with stairs, or you are travelling with a pushchair, ask about the villa's position relative to the centre before booking.

And you do not strictly have to choose. The two towns are close enough that people staying in one comfortably spend a day in the other.
