Patara Beach: Turkey's Longest Sandy Shore (Kaş Guide)

By the Yazlikya team, Kalkan

Patara Beach, about 40 km from Kaş, is one of Antalya's most dramatic natural shores. With roughly 18 kilometres of uninterrupted golden sand, it is known as Turkey's longest beach, backed by rolling dunes that create an almost desert-like landscape.

Where is Patara and how to get there?

Patara lies west of Kalkan, towards Fethiye, reached via Gelemiş village just off the D400 highway. It is about 15 minutes from Kalkan and 40 minutes from Kaş. The same ticket covers both the ancient city and the beach.

Why visit Patara?

  • Turkey's longest beach: 18 km of continuous sand makes it easy to escape the crowds.
  • Sea turtle nesting site: Patara is a protected breeding ground for loggerhead turtles, so during the nesting season (May–October) the beach closes in the evening; leave no trace and keep away from the nests.
  • An ancient city next door: Patara, a capital of the Lycian League, sits right beside the beach with its theatre, council house and one of the oldest known lighthouses in the world.
  • Unspoilt coast: Protected status keeps the beachfront free of concrete — just a few sunbeds and a snack kiosk.

Practical tips

  • Bring water and sunscreen; natural shade is almost non-existent.
  • Early morning or late afternoon offer the best light and cooler air.
  • Closing times change with the season; if you plan to watch the sunset from the dunes, check the time at the entrance.
